Stove chambers
The chamber can be what turns a stove into a proper focal point. Start with a plain fireboard chamber that you can paint to match your walls or opt for a full brick chamber that is perfectly built and matched to your room. Alternatively, look through the various chamber options that we offer, size, build and fit throughout Yorkshire

The practical starting point
Plain fireboard chambers
A plain fireboard chamber is the most cost-effective heat-resistant material that can be used to line out the chamber recess for a stove. This type of chamber can be painted to match the room décor and is typically supplied in a 3 piece set comprising one large rear panel and 2 smaller side returns.
The anatomy
What Actually Makes Up a Fireplace Chamber?
A fireplace chamber is much more than simply the opening where the stove sits. It is the complete environment that surrounds the appliance, with every component carefully designed to perform both a practical and aesthetic role.
The process begins by creating or enlarging the fireplace opening to the correct dimensions, before installing a suitably sized concrete lintel or depending on the size a steel beam to provide structural support. The chamber is then lined in your chosen finish, whether that is handmade brick slips, natural stone, porcelain, or a smooth paintable Glasroc Firecase lining. Every material is installed onto non-combustible, heat-resistant backing using specialist adhesives and fixings, ensuring the chamber withstands the high temperatures generated by a wood-burning or multi-fuel stove for many years to come.
Above the opening sits the mantel or beam, providing the finishing touch to the fireplace. This may be a solid oak beam where the required safety clearances can be achieved. In some installations, a discreet heat shield or protector plate can be fitted above the stove, allowing the natural timber beam to be positioned closer to the top of the chamber opening while remaining within the manufacturer's specified clearances and current Building Regulations. Alternatively, where the design calls for the beam to be installed even closer to the stove, a non-combustible beam such as an Inglebeam can be used, offering the appearance of a traditional timber beam while providing complete peace of mind and full regulatory compliance.
Beneath the stove is the hearth, crafted from materials such as Antique Leather black granite, slate, natural stone or porcelain. Each hearth is cut to size and designed to complement both the fireplace and the room, while meeting the dimensional requirements of current Building Regulations.
Hidden from view but equally important is the register plate, installed above the stove to seal the chimney opening. This helps improve the efficiency of the flue system, prevents soot and debris from falling from above and into the chamber, and contributes to a cleaner, more effective installation.
At Carl Finnell, every fireplace chamber is individually designed during your home survey. We carefully consider the proportions of the opening, the choice of materials, the hearth, the beam and the stove, ensuring every element works together to create a fireplace that is not only safe and efficient but also beautifully balanced and perfectly suited to your home.

Common questions
Chambers, answered plainly
What is a stove chamber?
It is the built recess your stove sits in, from the opening and lintel to the wall finish, the beam above and the hearth below. We design all of it together on the home survey, so it works as one fireplace rather than separate parts that share a wall.
Do you match the chamber to my house?
Yes. With brick we can often match your original brickwork, and with every finish we bring samples to the home survey and look at them against your walls, floor and light before anything is agreed.
Can you build a chamber where there is no fireplace?
Yes. We can open up a bricked-up chimney breast, or build a false chimney breast against a flat wall with a twin-wall flue behind it, so the finished room looks like the fireplace was always there.
