Why it is worth doing properly

Thirty five years of reading stone, proportion and light

After 35 years of designing, making and installing fireplaces, we have developed a detailed understanding of how stone, proportion, light and architectural surroundings work together.

For us, designing a fireplace is never simply about choosing a model from a catalogue. It is about understanding the building and creating something that looks as though it was always meant to be there.

The finest fireplaces are not simply supplied. They are designed around the home, the architecture and the people who live there.

What it costs fitted

What a bespoke fireplace costs, installed

These are worked examples from real installations, published in full so you can see what a finished fireplace actually costs. Each one covers the fireplace, the hearth, the chamber, the stove, the flue pipe, up to 10 metres of stainless steel liner, the cowl, the materials and the HETAS registered installation, including VAT.

Each figure assumes a working masonry chimney breast at least 1800mm wide, with a chimney around 10 metres high and ladder access. They are worked examples rather than fixed quotes, and your own figure is confirmed on the free home survey.

Common questions

Bespoke fireplaces, answered plainly

What does a bespoke fireplace actually mean?

It means the fireplace is designed for one room rather than picked from a catalogue. We work from the architecture, the proportions and the character of the house, then the stone is cut and hand finished to those sizes. Nothing here has a standard size, because made to measure is the starting point rather than an upgrade.

How much does a bespoke stone fireplace cost?

The surrounds in this range start at £2,800 and run to around £6,000. A complete installation, meaning the fireplace, the hearth, the chamber, the stove, the flue, the liner and the HETAS registered fit, has come out between £6,910 and £11,750 on the examples shown here. Your own figure is confirmed on the free home survey.

How long does a bespoke fireplace take?

Each one is handcrafted to order, so it is not an off the shelf lead time. We give you a realistic date at the survey, once the design, the stone and the stove are settled.

Which stone should I choose?

Limestone is calm and traditional, marble brings more pattern and formality, and sandstone and gritstone are the local stones with more texture. All our surveyors carry a wide selection of samples, so you can compare materials in the comfort of your own home.

Can you design around a fire I already own?

Yes. On the Provence near Ripon we scaled the fireplace taller and wider than its standard proportions to carry the client's French Godin cast iron fire, and had the fire itself refurbished with replacement parts made by a local blacksmith.

Do you fit the fireplace as well as make it?

Yes. Carl Finnell is HETAS registered, so the fireplace, chamber, hearth, stove and flue are all handled by the same team and the installation is certified and notified to Building Control.
