A clean, safe stove for winter

This visit shows the standard every sweep should meet. Rotary power sweeping drives a purpose-made head up the full bore of the flue on a flexible drive, scouring soot and tar that pull-through brushes slide past, while a HEPA-filter vacuum captures the dust at source. The room is sheeted, the stove sealed while we work, and the job ends with the draw checked and a written record for the owner’s file.

A double-sided, double-door stove like this Stovax adds its own wrinkles: twice the glass to clean, twice the rope seals to check, and a firebox that serves two rooms and therefore works harder than most. It is exactly the kind of appliance where an annual service pays for itself in performance.

Every winter of burning coats the flue and compresses the seals a little more, and none of it announces itself until the stove is hard to light and the glass will not stay clear. A late-summer service resets the system before the season: flue swept, seals and firebricks checked, airwash cleaned, safety check done. The record we leave also keeps you straight with insurers, many of whom may ask for proof of regular sweeping after any chimney-related claim.

Around Malton and Ryedale there is a rural extra: jackdaw nests are the most common blockage we clear, and a bird-guard cowl fitted after the sweep stops the same nest returning next spring.

We sweep and service across the whole of Ryedale, from Malton and Norton out to the estate villages, Pickering and the moors edge at Helmsley. Stoves we did not install are as welcome as those we did: most of the appliances we service were fitted by someone else years ago, and honest condition reports come as standard.

A sweep is also the moment to catch the early warnings: cracked firebricks, loose baffle plates, tired rope seals, damaged glass clips or signs that the flue has been burning too cool. None of those checks needs drama, but all of them help keep a stove efficient, easier to light and safer before the next winter load of logs goes in.
