A hanging stove in a converted chapel
A converted former chapel in Bedale, North Yorkshire, given a striking contemporary centrepiece: a Dik Geurts Oval hanging stove, floating on a made to measure steel bracket beneath a seven metre vaulted ceiling.
The project
A centrepiece to suit the building
This bespoke installation was designed and completed in a beautifully converted former chapel in Bedale, North Yorkshire. The client wanted a striking centrepiece to suit the character and scale of the building, so we selected the Dik Geurts Oval hanging stove.
The result is a stunning focal point that perfectly suits the vaulted interior while providing efficient, contemporary heating. A suspended stove of this kind is not chosen off a shelf and fitted in an afternoon: it is designed, measured and engineered around the room, and every element you see here was made specifically for this house.
Planning the installation
Measured to the millimetre
With a suspended stove, careful planning is essential. When ordering the appliance, the length of the first section of flue pipe attached to the stove must be specified, as this determines the finished height of the appliance above the floor.
Several key measurements were therefore confirmed before the order was placed with the manufacturer in the Netherlands, ensuring the stove was positioned exactly as intended.

The feature
The bespoke support bracket
The finished bracket, looking up through the opening to the vaulted ceiling roughly seven metres above.
The joiner had already created a large opening, with a clear view through to the vaulted ceiling around seven metres above. It was important that the supporting structure complemented both the stove and the surrounding architecture.
Our office designed and fully detailed a bespoke steel support bracket, approved by the client before being manufactured by a local steel fabricator. Once completed, it was professionally powder coated in a colour matched to the stove for a seamless, high-quality finish.
The finished bracket not only provides the necessary structural support but also forms a striking architectural feature in its own right. We believe every installation should enhance the interior of a property, creating a beautiful focal point as well as providing warmth.

"Seven metres of flue,
and not a detail left to chance."
The detail
The hearth and furniture
To complement the suspended stove, we designed a custom-shaped hearth that follows the elegant curves of the appliance, reinforcing the contemporary design and creating another distinctive feature within the room.
Using the same material, we also produced a matching coffee table top, helping to tie the overall design together and create a cohesive living space.
The flue system
Performance that stays out of the way
Above the initial appliance connection, we installed approximately 7 metres of premium European twin-wall insulated stainless steel flue, finished in a durable matt black powder coating. The insulated twin-wall construction provides excellent flue performance while maintaining the required safe clearances to combustible materials throughout the building.
The result is a flue system that not only performs exceptionally well but also complements the clean, minimalist appearance of the hanging stove.

Home survey and design
Involved from the drawing board
Installations of this nature are typically completed as part of a new build or major renovation project. To ensure every element fits together correctly, we recommend carrying out a comprehensive home survey early in the design process.
We regularly work alongside architects, builders and interior designers, using architectural drawings and plans where available. By becoming involved at an early stage, we can ensure the stove, flue system and supporting structure are fully integrated into the building design, delivering a safe installation with an outstanding visual finish.

Why suspended stoves need early decisions
This Bedale project already shows the visible drama: an oval hanging stove, a curved hearth, a seven metre flue and a custom steel support. The quieter lesson is timing. Suspended stoves need the finished height, bracket position, flue length and hearth shape settled before the appliance is ordered, because small changes above the ceiling can move the whole composition in the room below.
That is why early involvement matters. For another no-chimney project, see the Contura barn conversion installation at Earby.
Questions about this kind of job
Asked and answered
Can a hanging stove go in any room?
No. It needs suitable structure above, a workable flue route, enough ceiling height and a hearth position that makes sense in the room. The survey decides whether the idea is suitable.
Why was a bespoke steel bracket needed?
The stove and flue needed secure structural support, and the visible opening to the vaulted ceiling meant the bracket also had to look intentional. A custom fabricated bracket solved both problems.
Does a suspended stove still need a hearth?
Yes. A non-combustible hearth is still required beneath the appliance, and on a sculptural install it should be shaped with the stove rather than treated as an afterthought.
Do you install hanging stoves around Bedale?
Yes, where the building suits the appliance. Bedale, the Dales edge and larger rural conversions are exactly the sort of properties where a suspended stove can make sense.
