A Stylish Aspect for This Selby Home
This Selby fireplace was rebuilt around a Parkray Aspect 5 woodburning stove, with an Olde Coach House rustic brick rear chamber, paintable Glasroc sides, a dark slate hearth, a natural oak fascia beam, direct external air and a new flexible chimney liner.
The project
From the old surround to a complete new fireplace
As part of this project, we removed the existing timber fireplace surround before safely capping and sealing the gas supply in preparation for the new wood-burning stove installation.
A new, larger fireplace chamber was created by opening the chimney breast to provide the correct proportions for the new woodburning appliance. A reinforced concrete lintel was installed to support the masonry above, before the rear chamber wall was lined with handmade-style rustic brick slips and the sides with a smooth non-combustible Glasroc Firecase material which can then be painted to match or contrast the room.
The dark slate hearth was then laid inside the chamber and measuring approximately 900 x 380mm. In front of the chimney breast the hearth measured 1200mm x 350mm x 20mm high. A perfect complement to the new engineered oak floor.
Next, we fitted the natural oak fascia beam, measuring 1200mm × 140mm × 35mm thick. The beam was supplied in a medium oak finish, carefully selected to complement the existing engineered oak flooring and create a warm, cohesive finish throughout the room.
To ensure the installation is completely safe and works efficiently, we installed a British-manufactured twin-wall stainless steel flexible flue liner, complete with an anti-downdraught cowl on the chimney pot. This cowl helps prevent birds, rain and wind from entering the flue while significantly reducing the risk of downdraught.
The installation was completed with a Parkray Aspect 5 woodburning stove and a carbon monoxide alarm. The appliance was fully commissioned, safety tested and demonstrated to the homeowners before handover.
Direct External Air Supply
Combustion air delivered from outside
To maximise efficiency, the stove was installed with a direct external air supply. This system delivers combustion air directly from outside into the appliance, reducing draughts within the room while improving combustion efficiency. The result is a cleaner burn, lower emissions, greater comfort and a reduced fuel consumption

Slate, rustic brick and medium oak in one room
The finished room brings together three clear materials around the black stove. Dark slate runs through the chamber and across the front of the chimney breast, Olde Coach House handmade-style brick slips line the rear, and smooth Glasroc Firecase sides can be painted to match or contrast the room.

The technical work
A complete installation behind the visible finish
The work behind the room includes the reinforced concrete lintel, vitreous flue pipe, chimney closure plate kit, adaptors and a British-made 316-grade Triple Lock flexible stainless steel liner. An anti-downdraught cowl completes the system at the chimney pot. The flues and chimney liners guide explains how those parts connect the stove to the chimney.
The installation also includes the direct external air connection, carbon monoxide alarm, commissioning and HETAS certification. The chimney sweeping remains arranged and paid for by the customer, while the existing gas supply is capped and sealed by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
