The inspiration

From a photograph to a working fireplace design

During the initial consultation, the client shared a photograph of a stone fireplace they had admired at a friend's home in Bath, Somerset. They asked whether we could reproduce the design for their own home in Scarborough. The answer was yes, provided the proportions, material and room setting were treated properly rather than copied blindly.

The chosen Slaidburn fireplace is crafted from premium honed Yorkshire sandstone. Its clean-lined header, substantial corbel details and warm neutral tone give the surround enough presence for a main room without making the stonework feel overworked.

The material

Why honed sandstone suited the room

Sandstone is a good choice where a client wants visible stone character, but not the sharper formality of marble or polished granite. The honed finish keeps the surface calm, while the stone still carries natural texture and tonal variation.

The corbels are the important architectural detail here. They give the header proper support visually and make the surround feel rooted in traditional English fireplace design, while the honed face keeps the overall finish calm and easy to live with.

The thinking

A reproduction shaped for the room

The heart of this Scarborough job was the client's Bath inspiration: a stone fireplace with enough character to anchor the room. Reproducing it meant keeping the feel of the original while adjusting the proportions, stone choice and detailing to suit this home.

The Slaidburn sandstone fireplace gave the right base. Its honed Yorkshire sandstone, clean header and substantial corbels carry the traditional shape, while the warm neutral tone keeps the room from feeling too formal.

The material

Sandstone with enough weight for the coast

Scarborough homes often suit materials with texture and substance. Honed sandstone has that weight without the gloss of polished stone. It can sit comfortably in a traditional room, but the clean lines also work where the surrounding decor is simpler.

The finished surround is intentionally fireplace-led: honed sandstone, a clean header and corbels doing the visual work without crowding the room. For wider stove, flue and coastal installation work, see more of what we do around Scarborough.

Questions about this kind of job

Asked and answered

What made this Scarborough fireplace a reproduction project?

The client supplied a photograph of a stone fireplace they admired at a friend's home in Bath, and asked whether we could reproduce the design for their own room.

Why use honed Yorkshire sandstone for the Slaidburn surround?

Honed sandstone gives a calm, tactile finish with natural warmth. It suits a traditional surround with corbels because it has enough texture and weight without needing a polished surface.

Are the corbels only decorative on this fireplace?

They are a key visual part of the design. The substantial corbels support the header visually and give the surround the period character the client wanted from the Bath inspiration.

Can you copy a fireplace from a photograph?

Often, yes, if the room proportions and material choice are handled properly. The photograph starts the conversation, then the fireplace is adapted so it belongs in the actual home.
