Reclaimed & Aged Stone Hearths
Reclaimed Yorkstone flags, new sandstone and gritstone, and Old Mill aged olive, grey and black limestone, each hearth cut to size for your fireplace or freestanding stove and fitted across Yorkshire.
Reclaimed Yorkstone
Reclaimed Yorkstone Flags
Nothing captures the character and authenticity of a traditional British home quite like reclaimed Yorkstone flags. Quarried from natural sandstone and shaped by decades, sometimes centuries, of use, each flagstone carries its own unique blend of colour, texture and natural weathering, creating a warmth and charm that simply cannot be replicated by newly manufactured materials.
Reclaimed Yorkstone is an exceptional choice for fireplace hearths, offering both timeless beauty and outstanding durability. Its naturally hard-wearing surface has already stood the test of time, making it perfectly suited to the demands of a wood-burning stove, multi-fuel stove or open fire. Every flag displays individual characteristics, subtle tonal variations and the occasional historic mark, ensuring that no two hearths are ever identical.
At Carl Finnell, each reclaimed Yorkstone hearth is carefully selected and individually cut to your exact requirements. Whether you are restoring a period property, complementing exposed beams and original stonework, or introducing a touch of heritage to a contemporary home, a bespoke Yorkstone hearth creates an authentic focal point that enhances the character of any room.
The natural beauty, history and craftsmanship found within reclaimed Yorkstone make it one of the most desirable hearth materials available. With every piece carrying its own story, it provides a truly unique finish that will continue to age gracefully and serve your home for generations to come.
The process
A Second Generation of Yorkstone
The photograph below shows a typical selection of reclaimed Yorkstone flags awaiting inspection before they can be transformed into a bespoke stove hearth for one of our clients here in Yorkshire. Every stone is individually assessed, sorted and graded according to its size, shape, colour and overall character to ensure the finished hearth has a balanced and natural appearance.
Once the selection process is complete, each flag is precision milled to a uniform 50mm thickness. This is an essential stage of the manufacturing process, as it allows the individual stones to be laid with consistent mortar joints, creating a level, stable and professionally finished hearth. Without milling, the varying thicknesses of reclaimed stone would result in uneven mortar beds and an untidy appearance, detracting from the quality of the finished installation.
By combining the timeless character of reclaimed Yorkstone with modern stone-processing techniques, we are able to create bespoke hearths that retain all the charm and authenticity of traditional flagstones while achieving the precision and quality expected in a contemporary fireplace installation.
Configuration
Hearth Configuration
Our reclaimed Yorkstone hearths are typically configured using five individual flagstones, three forming the front hearth and two creating the chamber base. This arrangement reflects the traditional construction methods found in period properties, giving the hearth the authentic character and appearance you would expect from an original Yorkstone installation.
Using multiple carefully selected flags also allows us to create a truly made-to-measure hearth, individually sized to suit each fireplace and room. Every stone is chosen for its colour, texture and natural weathering before being precision cut and laid to achieve a balanced, sympathetic design that complements both the stove and the surrounding fireplace.
The result is a bespoke hearth that retains all the charm and history of reclaimed Yorkshire stone while providing the strength, practicality and craftsmanship required for a modern wood-burning stove installation.
Colour
Colour Variation
One of the defining characteristics of reclaimed Yorkstone is its natural variation in colour, texture and weathering. As shown above, each individual flagstone has developed its own unique appearance over many decades of use, resulting in subtle differences in tone that come together to create a hearth full of warmth, depth and authentic character.
This individuality is the true beauty of reclaimed stone. No two hearths are ever identical, ensuring that every installation is completely unique and sympathetic to the age and style of your home.
Where possible, we are happy to select stones with similar shades or colour tones to achieve a particular look. However, because reclaimed Yorkstone is a natural material with a genuine history, an exact colour match can never be guaranteed.
If you prefer a more consistent appearance, we also manufacture bespoke hearths from new sandstone and gritstone. These can be carefully hand-finished and aged to recreate much of the charm and character of reclaimed stone while offering greater consistency in colour, texture and overall appearance.
Consistent finish
New Sandstone & Gritstone
For customers who prefer a more consistent appearance, we also manufacture bespoke hearths from new sandstone and gritstone. These premium natural stones offer the timeless beauty and durability of traditional masonry while providing greater consistency in colour, texture and finish than reclaimed materials.
Every hearth is individually cut to your exact dimensions, allowing us to create a bespoke installation that complements both your fireplace and your home. Sandstone and gritstone are exceptionally hard-wearing, making them ideal for wood-burning stoves, multi-fuel stoves and open fires, where strength, heat resistance and longevity are essential.
Unlike reclaimed stone, which naturally varies from piece to piece, new sandstone and gritstone provide a more uniform appearance while still retaining the warmth and character of natural stone. For those wishing to recreate the look of an older hearth, the stone can also be hand-finished and gently aged to soften the edges and develop a more traditional appearance.
Whether you are restoring a period property or creating a new fireplace with timeless appeal, bespoke sandstone and gritstone hearths offer the perfect balance of natural beauty, practicality and enduring craftsmanship.
Please Note: We strongly recommend that all natural stone hearths are sealed following installation and periodically resealed thereafter. A quality stone sealer helps protect the surface against stains, moisture and everyday wear, making the hearth easier to clean and maintain while preserving the natural beauty and character of the stone for many years to come.
Aged limestone
Old Mill Aged Limestone Hearths – 25mm
Our Old Mill aged limestone hearths are finished to recreate the appearance of timeworn stone and come in three natural colourways: olive, grey and black.
Old Mill Aged Olive Limestone
Our Aged Olive Limestone Hearths are crafted from natural limestone and finished to recreate the appearance of beautifully timeworn stone. Featuring warm olive tones, soft earthy shading and a deeply antiqued surface, each hearth has its own distinctive character, making it an excellent choice for period properties, country homes, farmhouses and traditional fireplace settings.
The aged finish is intentionally rustic and should not be mistaken for damage or poor workmanship. Every hearth is designed to celebrate the natural beauty of limestone, enhanced with an authentic weathered appearance that cannot be achieved with modern manufactured materials.
The pictures shown are intended as a guide only. Because every piece of limestone is unique, the hearth supplied may vary in colour, texture and the degree of weathering. Some hearths may appear lighter or darker, while others may exhibit more pronounced natural markings and aged detailing.

Your hearth may display:

Brick tile
Old Mill Olive Limestone Brick Tile
The Old Mill Olive Limestone Brick Tile is a beautifully aged natural limestone tile, showcasing soft olive tones, gently tumbled edges and a smooth, lightly textured matt finish. Inspired by the appearance of reclaimed stone flooring found in traditional farmhouses and historic buildings, it brings warmth, character and timeless appeal to any fireplace setting.
Ideal for creating bespoke stove hearths, fireplace chambers, feature walls and decorative fireplace details, these limestone brick tiles complement both period and contemporary interiors. Their natural variation in colour and texture creates an authentic handcrafted appearance that pairs perfectly with wood-burning stoves, multi-fuel stoves, gas fires and electric fires.
Each tile measures approximately 250 × 70 × 20mm and is individually produced from natural limestone. As with all genuine stone products, every tile is unique, displaying subtle differences in shade, surface texture and edge detail that enhance the finished installation.
The tiles are intentionally manufactured with slight dimensional variations and are not designed to create perfectly uniform grout joints. Instead, the irregular mortar lines replicate the charm and character of traditional reclaimed brick flooring, resulting in a fireplace with an authentic, time-worn appearance.
To protect the natural limestone and maintain its beauty, we recommend sealing the tiles with a suitable stone sealer after installation and periodically resealing them to help resist staining and everyday wear.

Common questions
Reclaimed and aged stone hearths, answered plainly
What is reclaimed Yorkstone?
It is natural sandstone flagstone reclaimed from older buildings and yards and shaped by decades of use. Each flag carries its own colour, texture and weathering, so no two hearths are ever identical.
Can you match the colour of reclaimed stone?
Where possible we select stones with similar shades or tones to achieve a particular look. Because reclaimed Yorkstone is a natural material with a genuine history, an exact colour match can never be guaranteed. If you prefer a more consistent finish, our new sandstone, gritstone and aged limestone hearths offer greater uniformity.
Do natural stone hearths need sealing?
Yes. We recommend all natural stone hearths are sealed after installation and periodically resealed. A quality stone sealer protects against stains, moisture and everyday wear while preserving the natural character of the stone.
What sizes do the aged limestone hearths come in?
The 25mm aged limestone hearths come in three standard sizes: 1220mm × 380mm, 1220mm × 455mm and 1370mm × 380mm. A hearth and oversized chamber base package is also available, cut to size on installation.
