Scarborough chimney sweeping
Chimney sweep and stove servicing in Scarborough
Rotary chimney sweeping and annual wood burning stove servicing across Scarborough, Scalby, Newby, Seamer, Cayton and the nearby coast. The flue is cleared, the stove is checked and the room is left clean, with a written record of the visit for your files.
What the visit covers
More than putting a brush up the flue
- Rotary power sweepThe chimney or liner is swept through its full bore and the soot is contained at the stove.
- HEPA dust controlA HEPA-filter vacuum captures fine dust while the opening and room are protected.
- Draw and blockage checkBuild-up, debris and obvious restrictions are checked before the stove goes back into use.
- Stove conditionRope seals, firebricks, baffle, glass, airwash, door and grate can be checked as part of the service.
- Straight adviceA tired liner, unsuitable cowl or worn part is explained separately rather than hidden inside the sweep.
- Written recordYou receive a record of the sweep and service to keep with the installation paperwork.
Coastal chimneys
Scarborough wind can expose more than a dirty flue
Scarborough has tall Victorian and Edwardian chimneys, former guesthouses, exposed rooflines and homes close to the bay. Soot and tar still need removing in the normal way, but a fire that smokes when the wind changes may have a second problem: downdraught at the chimney top, the wrong terminal, an oversized old flue or a liner that is no longer sound.
The sweep is the right starting point because it removes the most common restriction and lets the system be assessed cleanly. If the draw remains poor, Carl does not pretend another pass with the brushes will cure it. The next step may be a different cowl, a camera inspection or work to the chimney liner or flue, quoted separately after the cause is understood.
Salt air and exposed weather also make it sensible to look at the chimney terminal, flashing and visible metalwork while the stove is being maintained. Catching corrosion or movement early is easier than waiting for water, debris or poor draw to reach the room below.
Stove servicing
Clear the flue and check the appliance together
A clean chimney is only half of a well-maintained installation. Compressed door rope can leak air around the controls, cracked firebricks stop protecting the stove body properly, and a worn or distorted baffle changes the way gases leave the firebox. These faults can make the stove harder to control even when the flue itself is clear.
Combining the sweep with a service means the whole system is looked at in one visit. Carl checks the parts that wear, cleans the glass and airwash path, and identifies anything that needs replacing. No additional repair is assumed: parts and larger work are explained and agreed separately.
This service is available for existing installations as well as stoves Carl has fitted. For a replacement or first installation, the dedicated page for wood burning stoves in Scarborough covers the survey, appliance choice, hearth, flue and HETAS sign-off.
Holiday lets and busy stoves
Plan the visit before the heating season
A stove in a Scarborough holiday let needs to be simple for guests and easy for the owner or manager to keep on top of. Booking the annual sweep and service before autumn avoids the busiest weeks and gives time to replace a rope seal, firebrick or baffle before the first cold booking.
The appointment can be arranged around a changeover where access permits. The written service record then stays with the property file alongside the HETAS paperwork and appliance manual. How often the chimney needs attention depends on use and fuel, so a heavily used stove may need checking sooner than one lit only at weekends.
We cover Scarborough, Scalby, Newby, Seamer, Cayton, Eastfield and the Aytons. The broader Scarborough service-area page covers fireplaces, hearths, installations and coastal flue work.
Existing Scarborough work
A real project on the coast
Carl's published Scarborough case study is a made-to-measure sandstone fireplace rather than a chimney-sweeping job. It is included as honest evidence that Scarborough is part of the working service area, not as proof of a different service.
Read the Slaidburn sandstone fireplace case study to see the finished local project and the standard of work around the fireplace opening.

Scarborough questions
Chimney sweeping and stove servicing, answered
How often should a chimney be swept in Scarborough?
For a wood burning stove in regular use, once a year is the sensible minimum. A stove used heavily through winter or in a busy holiday let may need checking more often. The right interval depends on the fuel, appliance and how often it burns.
Does a chimney sweep include servicing the stove?
Carl can combine the sweep with a stove service. The visit can cover the flue or liner, rope seals, firebricks, baffle, glass, airwash, door, grate and general condition of the installation.
Can sweeping fix smoke blowing back into the room?
A blockage or soot build-up can weaken the draw, so sweeping may solve it. In an exposed Scarborough property, downdraught can also come from the chimney height, terminal, cowl or an oversized or damaged flue. If sweeping is not the whole answer, Carl explains what needs checking next.
Do you sweep chimneys in Scarborough holiday lets?
Yes. A sweep and service can be arranged around changeovers so the stove is clean, checked and ready before the busy heating season. You receive a written record of the visit for your files.
Do you cover Scalby, Seamer and Cayton?
Yes. The service area includes Scarborough, Scalby, Newby, Seamer, Cayton, Eastfield, East Ayton and West Ayton, with nearby coastal villages covered on the same route.
Will you service a stove that Carl did not install?
Yes. Existing wood burning and multi-fuel stoves can be swept and serviced even when another installer originally fitted them. Any repair or replacement part is explained separately before extra work is agreed.
How much is a chimney sweep in Scarborough?
The price depends on the appliance, flue arrangement and whether you also need a full stove service or replacement parts. Send the stove and property details and the scope and price can be confirmed before the visit.
