Older York homes usually already have a constructional hearth, the solid non-combustible base built into the floor beneath the original fireplace. What sits on top, the part you see and choose the material for, is the superimposed or decorative hearth. Knowing which layer does the fireproofing matters, because it changes what a compliant new hearth needs to be.
When an open fire is converted to a stove, the hearth requirement changes with it. We check the existing constructional hearth, then cut a superimposed hearth sized to the appliance and its clearances. Angled walls, bay windows and the irregular chimney breasts common in York terraces are drawn on the survey and cut to fit.
Nothing is cut until the survey confirms the opening, the floor build-up and the appliance, so a York hearth sits flush and square even against a wall that has moved over a century and a half.
